Windhoek to Victoria Falls

Your next adventure starts as you drive through Gobabis Town as you head to Botswana. Namib desert stretches to the Kalahari desert, which takes 70% of Botswana. Vegetation is characterized by short bushes, mostly acacia trees. Gobabis is known for cattle raring since crop farming is not sustainable due to low precipitation.

Botswana is the birth place of all modern humans about 200 000 years ago. Today Botswana is home to eight tribal groups namely, Batswana, Kalanga, Ndebele, Herero and San. Batswana are the dominate group although the Khoisan people were the first inhabitants of this vast land of Botswana. Khoisan rock paintings dates back to 1 500 – 2 000 years ago. They are known to have lived on picking wild fruits, hunting and gatherers and migrating across the region. Rock paintings are found in Botswana but also in Lesotho, Namibia, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Zambia and Angola.

Kalahari sand-veld is often referred as ‘thirstland’ to distinguish it from true desert. Generally, Botswana vegetation is savanna grassland with yellow or light brown grass cover and woody plants. The savanna ranges from acacia shrub savanna in the southwest through savanna thornbush and tree savanna parkland. As you go to the north and east there is denser woodlands predominately the African Ironwood (mopane). Open grasslands surround the Okavango Delta and Makgadikgadi pans.

Botswana Safari

Botswana has a diverse animal life and offers a perfect habitat. With 150 species of mammals and the highest population of African elephant alongside a sizeable population of the Cape buffalo, arguably this is the best safari country. Birdlife is prolific, with more than 460 species; a variety of reptiles and amphibians close to 200 species.

Visit one of the prominent national parks in Botswana. Among the best for safari is the Chobe National Park, Moremi Game Reserve, Makgadikgadi and the Central Kalahari.
